It is not usually 100 degrees F in Texas this time of year. That level of heat usually comes in the summer. However, in this year of climate crises, Texas will swelter in early May. Southwest of San Antonio, next to the Mexican border, it is expected to be 101 degrees F near the Mexican border.

City Challenge –Those With The Worst Air Pollution

Temperatures above 100 degrees are dangerous to much of the population, particularly to people who do not have access to air conditioning either because their homes do not have it or they work outside. Hundreds of deaths are attributed to extreme heat each year in the US.

Additionally, scorching areas affect the economy. Hours of labor are usually reduced, and crops are sometimes damaged. On a much longer-term basis, there is a theory that people and companies in the hottest areas will migrate north as the heat worsens.

    Electricity Challenge

There is also damage to the grid systems that deliver electricity. Generators and power stations become overloaded. Texas has among the worst electricity grids in the country.

The odds are that 100-degree heat will become more common in Texas. How fast that will affect the economy is open to question, but it is a certainty that it will.
