Power Outages Surge In Texas

According to Climate Central, a power outage affects over 50,000 homes. Based on its analysis, Texas had the most from 2020 to 2023, with 210.

Texas was followed, at a distant second place, by Michigan at 157 and California at 145. The information should come as no surprise.

Many of the outages in Texas have been national news. This is true, particularly with a grid collapse that caused 17 days of outages in February 2021, triggered by major snowstorms and freezing ice. More recently, violent summer weather hit Houston and caused power interruptions to one million people.

More Violent Storms

Yet another violent storm hit Houston in the last few days, with hail, high winds, and torrential rain. Global warming has been blamed for these events.

Other parts of Texas have had events that caused surges in electricity use. Temperatures in San Antonio hit over 100 degrees F late in May, and the need for air conditioning stained an aging grid. Temperatures will likely be hotter for more days in June, July, and August.

Almost every climate scientist who tracks growing outages across the US says that global warming will make these more frequent. Infrastructure experts see energy systems as inadequate for taking the stress.
