An area of disturbed weather over the southern Gulf of Mexico’s Bay of Campeche, designated Invest 91L by the National Hurricane Center, or NHC, on Monday morning, will likely organize into the season’s first tropical depression by Wednesday as it moves west to west-northwest at less than 10 mph toward the northeastern Mexican coast. A hurricane hunter aircraft is scheduled to investigate the system on Monday afternoon. Update (11 p.m. EDT Monday): Invest 91L was upgraded to Potential Tropical Cyclone One at 5 p.m. EDT Monday. A tropical storm watch was issued for a broad swath of the western Gulf Coast from Puerto de Altamira, Mexico, north to Port O’Connor, Texas. PTC 1 was predicted to become Tropical Storm Alberto on Tuesday. The breadth of the watch is mainly because PTC 1 has an unusually broad wind field: whether or not PTC 1 becomes a tropical cyclone, winds of tropical storm strength could come ashore far north of its center.
