Baylor Scott & White and Blue Cross Blue Shield extend contract deadline

Baylor Scott & White and Blue Cross Blue Shield have agreed to extend their contracts temporarily so patients don't lose in-network coverage on Monday.

Why it matters: Texas' largest insurance provider and nonprofit health system will continue negotiating reimbursement rates until October. The extension means Baylor will remain in-network at least until then.

The big picture: There are dozens of Baylor Scott & White facilities in North Texas, including several hospitals.

Catch up quick: Baylor had notified Blue Cross it would terminate their relationship July 1 if the insurer didn't significantly increase its payments to the system, per Blue Cross.

    • The two started negotiations to keep Baylor as an in-network provider for Blue Cross members. The goal now is to finalize a long-term agreement by Oct. 1.
    • "Baylor Scott & White and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas share a commitment to the health and well-being of the patients and members we serve," they said in a joint statement.

Threat level: If the two aren't able to reach an agreement, Blue Cross members with Baylor doctors will either have to switch providers or pay more for any Baylor services.

    • Members who are pregnant or have a disability, acute condition or life-threatening illness may qualify for continuity of care coverage that would allow them to receive Baylor care at in-network rates even if it leaves the network.
