Hurricane Beryl is swiftly approaching southern Texas after wreaking havoc on the Cayman Islands on Thursday, leaving a wake of "Armageddon-like" destruction throughout the Caribbean.

The Category 3 storm , which contains winds of up to 120 mph, is moving across the Gulf at approximately 20 mph, according to a forecast from The Weather Channel , could make landfall in the southern U.S. around Texas by Tuesday morning, according to a map from the National Weather Service.

In explaining the map, which shows windspeeds projected through the next several days as the hurricane advances, the NWS issued a dire warning, writing, "It is important for users to realize that wind speed probabilities that might seem relatively small at their location might still be quite significant, since they indicate that there is a chance that a damaging or even extreme event could occur that warrants preparations to protect lives and property."

Caribbean leaders have been taking to social media in the wake of Beryl making landfall, sharing shocking images and horrifying videos of the mass destruction the hurricane has been causing. The prime minister of Grenada called the destruction on the island nation of Carriacou "almost Armageddon-like," while the prime minister of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines called the damage to Union Island "a devastating spectacle," CBS News reported.

While Beryl is currently a Category 3 storm, with wind speeds of around 120 mph, it was a Category 4 when it ravaged Grenada, reportedly wiping out most of the island's electrical infrastructure as well as homes and agriculture.

Dickon Mitchell, the island nation's prime minister, said on Tuesday, according to CBS News, that there was "almost total damage or destruction of all buildings, whether they be public buildings, homes or other private facilities." He added that there was also "complete devastation and destruction of agriculture" and "complete and total destruction of the natural environment."

"There is literally no vegetation left anywhere on the island of Carriacou," he said, adding in a Facebook post on Tuesday night, "We arrived earlier today in Carriacou to assess the damages and immediate needs of the people. Seeing the impact firsthand was heartbreaking.

"Homes and businesses have been severely damaged, and our brothers and sisters are facing significant challenges," he continued. "But in every face, I saw resilience and strength. One gentleman even said, 'We’re on the rise; things are going to get better,' and I want to echo those words. We will emerge from this stronger and more united than ever. The accompanying video shows just a glimpse of the destruction faced."

The storm reportedly killed one person on the island of Bequia, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines confirmed. And with the 2024 hurricane season predicted to be even worse than last year's, many of the island nations are bracing for more powerful storms that could wreak havoc on their infrastructure and result in more deaths. An additional two people were reportedly killed across Grenada in the hurricane.
