Texas and Meta reach $1.4 billion settlement

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has announced a $1.4 billion settlement with meta over its collection of Texans biometric identifiers. Paxton sued meta, the parent company of Facebook, back in 2022, alleging the company use facial recognition to automatically tag users and photos without disclosing how the feature worked. The use of biometric identifiers is illegal under Texas law, which prohibits companies from capturing information such as retina, fingerprints or hand geometry unless the person is informed and provides consent. The $1.4 billion settlement is the largest ever obtained from an action brought by a single state.
