AUTHOR’S NOTE: This story has been updated to include more details on the May 28 Primary Runoff Elections for residents of Texoma.

TEXOMA ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Early voting ahead of the May 2024 Primary Runoff Elections gets underway on Monday, May 20, 2024, and continues until Friday, May 24, 2024, with Primary Runoff Election Day taking place on Tuesday, May 28, 2024.

Before Texomans head to their county’s polling locations to vote, the KFDX, KJTL, and Texoma’s Homepage teams want to ensure voters are informed in all local and statewide elections before their ballots are cast.

YOUR LOCAL ELECTION HQ: March 2024 primary results for local races

To that end, Your Local Election Headquarters proudly presents our official guide to early voting in Texoma for the May 2024 Primary Runoff Elections.

What’s the point of a primary runoff election?

Primary elections are held before general elections and are used to either narrow the field of candidates or outright select one to represent a particular political party.

Both Democrats and Republicans held primary elections across Texas on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, as a means to select which candidate will represent them in the November 2024 General Election.

Those who voted in the March 2024 primary elections are only able to vote in the runoff election for the same party for which they cast a ballot in March 2024. Those who did not vote in the March 2024 primary elections may vote for either party in the runoff election.

In Texas, a candidate must receive a majority of votes to be declared the winner. If no candidate is successful in obtaining an outright majority (over 50%) during the primary election, a runoff will be held between the two candidates receiving the most votes.

What local primary races require a runoff?

In several local races, an outright majority was not obtained by any single candidate, forcing a runoff in the race for both a Democratic and a Republican candidate for Texas Senate District 30, as well as a Republican candidate for Archer County Commissioner, Precinct 3, and Young County Commissioner, Precinct 3.

Registered voters who are unsure of whether or not they live within a particular Texas Senate District can verify their district by looking at their voter registration card or contacting their county clerk or the election office of their particular county.
