First day at new Wichita Falls high schools closes with traffic concerns

WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — As quickly as it arrived, it’s now gone. The first day of school in the Wichita Falls ISD came in with much fanfare and closed with some uproar.

Controlled chaos might best describe the pick-up process after the WFISD’s first day of school. Cars started lining the loops at Memorial and Legacy High Schools as early as 2:15 p.m.

At Memorial High School, traffic was piling up along the Kell Freeway Service Road and Farm Road 369 on either side of the school.

Many parents were concerned about how traffic would work during pick-up and drop-off times at the new high schools, but Superintendent Dr. Donny Lee assured them that there would be order during those procedures.

What’s in store for WFISD this year? Dr. Lee explains

“You know, the first day of school without brand new state-of-the-art facilities, traffic is bad,” Dr. Lee said. “So, we’ve anticipated that and what we do is we have the police officers, our WFISD PD, they’re going to be performing traffic direction around the school inside the loop.”

Some parents took to social media to voice their concerns. Some mentioned student drivers need to be more aware, while others just said lines were long and hoped for improvement as the year goes on.

Elias Aguirre, a parent at Memorial High School, advocated for patience, as it’s not just the first time for parents at either high school, but it’s the first time for the administration, too.

“You know, the line is long, but it’s expected, you know, during a normal first day of school,” Aguirre said. “People just have to be a little bit patient while it’s hot and just know that their kid’s safety is the most important component of being out here.”

With parents from all over the city driving to the new high schools to pick up their kids, patience would always be at a premium.

As crazy as the process might have looked, pickup and dropoff can only improve as the school year goes on.

With the hectic first day ending, all parents and WFISD Administrators have to do is move on to the next day, building on an already historic day one.
