WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — A man who was involved in a short standoff with authorities in an RV on Star Avenue in April, followed by a fire in the RV, was sentenced on Aug. 23, to state jail for 6 months for an injury to his mother.

Police responded to the 400 block of Star Avenue on April 12, 2024, for a man with a gun. The caller told police her son, James Sims, had cut her hand.

When they arrived at the scene, police attempted to contact Sims in an RV in the backyard. Police said he refused to leave the RV, so they established a perimeter around the property.

Police decided not to attempt an arrest at the time, and once Sims’ family and officers left the scene, officers were called back to the scene because the RV Sims had been in was on fire.

While the Wichita Falls Fire Department put out the fire, WFPD officers located and arrested Sims for injury to an elderly person and terroristic threat.

Sims’ 76-year-old mother told police Sims came home and started an argument because the dog was outside. She said he began breaking things, including liquor bottles, and threw a bottle of Jim Beam at her, causing a cut to her wrist.

Sims’ father told police Sims had access to a gun and made threats he was going to kill the father, who is disabled and unable to leave his bed.

Sims has 50 prior arrests, including three for aggravated assault and one for assault of an officer. His convictions also include one for cruelty to an animal and one for injury to a child.
