WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Around 2008, a local group reached out to the Boys and Girls Club of Wichita Falls, looking to honor one of their charter members, James Lane. Several years later, Lane’s family said his name should be put to rest, and thus, the Legacy Dinner and Auction was born.

Through their partnership with the Mavericks, the Boys and Girls Club honors supporters and alumni each year. This year, it will have two honorees and a distinguished alumni.

Doyle Bentley and Leo Lane are this year’s Legacy Honorees, and Amy Simmons will receive the Josh Kimbrough Distinguished Alumni Award.

Jeff Pendley, chairman of the Legacy and Dinner, said Simmons “is a club kid, worked for the club, got a scholarship from the club, and is now an alumni member and an outstanding educator here in the Wichita Falls ISD.”

As for the Legacy Dinner and Auction, as much as it is to honor its supporters, it is also a fundraiser.

Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club, Randy Cooper, said “This is a fundraiser and to benefit young people that attend Boys and Girls Clubs and also college students. In our partnership every year, scholarships goes to deserving young people.”

The dinner and auction will take place on Thursday, September 12. Doors open at 5 p.m. at the MPEC Exhibit Hall, and the Mavericks will serve ribs and all the fixings at 6 p.m. There will be live music and live and silent auctions, and George Eustace will be the keynote speaker.

Tickets for the event are $60 a piece, or a table of eight for $400 and can be purchased by visiting the Wichita Falls Boys & Girls Clubs Alumni & Friends Facebook page or by calling (940) 322-2012 .

There are also community sponsorship opportunities for businesses and individuals at levels of $500, $750, and $1,000.

According to Cooper, Boys and Girls Clubs heavily rely on the Alumni and Friends Associations for many significant things, including facility improvements, food, and scholarships. They hope to see a good turnout for the event, for the sake of both fundraising and the honorees.

“If it wasn’t for people like this, Wichita Falls wouldn’t be as great of a community as it is,” Pendley said.
