(U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo.) — The U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) is investigating after a 19-year-old cadet was found unconscious in her dormitory on Wednesday night, Sept. 4.

According to USAFA, Academy first responders attempted life-saving measures on Cadet 4th Class Avery Koonce of Taylor, Texas, but were unsuccessful and now her death is under investigation.

“We lost an incredible teammate last night – while only with us for a short time, Avery positively
impacted her unit, her intercollegiate team, and her class – her loss will be felt across USAFA,” said Lt. Gen. Tony Bauernfeind, U.S. Air Force Academy Superintendent.

USAFA said Cadet Koonce was a member of the Class of 2028 and was an athlete on the Women’s Track and Field team.

“Our team is focused on providing support to Avery’s family, Cadet Squadron 38, the Track and Field team, and the entire Academy family,” said Lt. Gen. Bauernfeind.

The Air Force Academy will be providing a full complement of support services for cadets, faculty, and staff including Academy chaplains, mental health professionals, leaders, and others.
