WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — The Wichita Falls Fire Department believes it knows what caused an explosion at the Arbor Creek Apartments on Wednesday evening.

Firefighters responded to the complex on Weeks Park Lane at 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday for a three-alarm structure fire that was shortly upgraded to an explosion. Upon their arrival, first responders noted fire burning in the window of a first-floor unit.

WFFD investigator Jared Burchett said the fire had burned too long, causing a smoke explosion that blew out the unit’s window and threw debris into the street. It also shattered one of the windows in the second-floor apartment.

Crews contained the fire to its room of origin with the unit and reported no injuries to the apartment residents or the firefighters on the scene.

The Red Cross was called to assist those who had been displaced.
