WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Mexican Independence Day celebrations started early with a Saturday morning parade through downtown Wichita Falls.

Our Lady of Guadalupe began celebrating the Fiestas Patrias with a Saturday morning parade they organized at 9 a.m.

The Fiestas Patrias celebrates several critical Mexican historical events, with this parade celebrating the country earning its independence from Spain in 1810.

The parade started at 3rd and Scott Street and made its way to a central booth on 8th and Lamar.

School clubs, church groups and more participated in the parade, but Parade Director Maria Kalbfleisch said the Fiestas Patrias in Wichita Falls should be for everyone to celebrate.

“It brings an awareness of our ancestry, of our culture, and it also allows for us to open the Hispanic Month,” Kalbfleisch said. “For us, it’s a way of sharing what we have and inviting everyone to participate and have fun at the same time.”

The parade was just the first celebration of the Fiestas Patrias.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is hosting an official party with live music and food at its church, 4212 Marconi St., on Saturday, September 14, from noon to 11 p.m.
