WACO, Texas ( FOX 44 ) — In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, the Cameron Park Zoo hosted a special resource fair on Tuesday in order to raise awareness of and offer support for mental health.

The event, organized by the zoo’s IDEA Committee, highlighted the correlation between human and animal well-being, an integral part of the zoo’s “One Health” initiative.

Deputy Zoo Director Duane Hills emphasized the commitment to connecting the well-being of people and animals.

“We actually push a One Health initiative which talks about the correlation between the well-being of people and animals. We felt that this was a great opportunity to address that connection and support mental health,” Hills said.

Visitors to the zoo had the opportunity to engage with local and national organizations dedicated to mental health.

To complement the resource fair, the zoo also offered quiet hours for meditation in the aquarium, providing a peaceful retreat for visitors to reflect and relax.

The event was met with a positive reception from the community. While some families were surprised to encounter the resource fair during their visit, others were delighted to see such an event integrated into the zoo’s activities.

“It’s really comforting especially because during the early years I used to bring my younger grandchildren up here and it would just be healing, walking through this beautiful nature,” said Waco resident Anna Fajardo. “It’s great to know that the zoo supports the mental health community as well.”

For visitors like Anna, the event held personal significance. “It’s extremely important. I lost an 18-year-old son. It’s coming up on ten years, and being involved with others who have been through the same thing has helped tremendously,” she shared.

The IDEA Committee’s efforts demonstrated the zoo’s dedication to supporting mental health and fostering a sense of community care.

The fair featured informational booths where guests could learn about available resources, sign up for mental health classes and training courses, and receive takeaways such as buttons, wristbands, and goodie bags.

In a day that blended educational resources with the zoo’s unique setting, the Cameron Park Zoo underscored its role in promoting mental wellness alongside its mission to care for animals.
