WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — The Humane Society of Wichita County is wrapping up another successful year of Clear the Shelters, which saw a significant increase in adoptions from last year.

The Humane Society of Wichita County had 75 adoptions in a month, beating last year’s number by 40.

Humane Society director Cheryl Heineken says the organization usually has higher adoption numbers for dogs. Still, this year, it had a record of 21 cat adoptions and one donkey adoption.

In addition to a higher adoption rate, the shelter also received tons of much-needed pet food when it decided to implement a deal where people could bring in pet food in exchange for a pet after the facility ran low on food.

Shelter staff says they had 17 adoptions and received plenty of food in the first week of the deal. Staff also say this year’s success came from the waived adoption fees, the food for pet exchange, and the community’s participation.

Heineken said the community’s response was overwhelming and much needed.

“We were just really happy with the adoptions that took place. We were pleased with the families that came in and took advantage of that,” she said. “And then, also bringing us goodies. We really appreciated that because that’ll feed the dogs and cats that are still here.”

Despite the success of the Clear the Shelters campaign, the humane society still has a full house after it took in 13 more animals last week.

Campaigns like these remind us of the impact we can all have in giving these pets a second chance at life and a forever home.
