FORT SILL ( KFDX/KJTL ) — It was a powerful sight at Fort Sill Military Base Wednesday morning as hundreds gathered to mark the 23rd anniversary of 9/11.

The day started with speeches recounting the timeline of events that day, followed by a moment of silence at exactly 8:46 AM Eastern time, the exact moment the first plane hit the World Trade Center.

Hundreds who had gathered at Fort Sill stood united as they reflected on the lives lost and the bravery shown that day. Following the ceremony, attendees took part in a run of remembrance around the military base.

Fort Sill firefighter Brandon Wells said this event is more than just a tribute, it’s a way to show support for first responders and everyone who does their part to protect the nation.

“I’m honored that everyone’s come out here today to show their support and camaraderie and show that they care, and they don’t want to forget what happened that day,” he said. “I became a first responder to help people. And any opportunity I can do that, I’ll try to do that. And being out here may be one of those opportunities.”

While 9/11 may be behind us, the spirit of resilience and unity continues to live on through events like this.

The Fort Sill 9/11 remembrance ceremony and run is a reminder that even in the face of tragedy, the nation’s spirit remains unbroken.
