WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Wichita Falls police are warning citizens to be aware of scammers pretending to be law enforcement. Police said scammers call and tell people they have warrants, and if they don’t give them money immediately, they could go to jail.

WFPD spokesman Sgt. Charlie Eipper said the police department has received several complaints from citizens who say they received a very convincing call telling them they have warrants for their arrest, missed a court date or jury duty, and have to pay money over the phone right then to avoid going to jail.

Eipper said some of the residents said the caller told them they could use Bitcoin, gift cards, and Venmo to pay. Eipper said residents should not give these callers any information, and hang up instead.

Eipper said that as far as he knows, no law enforcement agency will call you and offer to let you pay money to avoid going to jail.

“Law enforcement does not do that,” he said.

The Wichita Falls Police Department and the City of Wichita Falls typically communicate with citizens through mail, media and their respective online portals.

Eipper said if you suspect someone calling you is trying to scam you, hang up and do not give them any information. If you have any questions or if you think you are a victim of a scam, call the police department’s non-emergency phone number, (940) 720-5000 , or the front desk at (940) 761-7792 .
