SCOTLAND ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Down along Highway 281 in Scotland, Texas, lies another dairy farm where the owners of Texas Natural Ag Resources have a very unique process to create their compost for anyone with a green thumb.

Out in Scotland, Wolf’s Legendairy uses a special machine to turn cow manure into something useful.

When Darrell Harden learned about it, he knew there was a way he could bank on his big idea to create Moo-trients Composted Cow Manure.

“With the dairy comes lots of manure,” Harden explained. “As a way to get rid of the manure, it’s put in this system—it’s a solid separator. And so it takes the manure, it turns it to a liquid and it comes out the end as compost material.”

Harden says Wolf has a flushing system that flushes all of the manure from these lanes out to a giant auger, where the solids are separated from the liquid. Then, after a long period of time, the manure dries out, creating a pure and natural compost.

“The foundation of a garden is a soil. And so when you use Moo-trients, you’re not only adding the micro [and] macronutrients; you help combat compaction to improve water retention,” Harden said. “Also, it keeps the organic material needed to create a healthy biome under the soil.”

With this idea, Harden decided to enter this year’s i.d.e.a.WF competition in hopes of expanding his local business.

“We’re only local because every bag that we produce now is by hand,” Harden explained. “If we win, we would be looking to buy equipment where we can do two, maybe 300 bags a day. At full steam, we’d be able to do well over a thousand bags a day.”

Buying equipment and producing more manure will allow Harden to get his product onto major retail shelves such as Atwoods or Home Depot. He will find out if he wins when the winners are announced on Oct. 23.
