OLNEY ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Twenty-six years ago, Verma Fobbs noticed there was a march for everything under the sun except Jesus. So, she started Olney’s March for Jesus as a way to let others know that God’s light shines through her.

“It means letting your light shine so others can see Christ in you and glorify the Father,” Fobbs said. “It means going into the streets, the highways and byways—that’s what we’ve been told to do.”

First Baptist Church of Olney pastor Dr. Chad Edgington said folks would gather at Tommy Perkin’s Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, for a parade and then march down Main Street in Olney, turning down Avenue ‘J’ for ‘Jesus,’ walking along Hamilton Street and back to the church parking lot.

Once they reach the church, the marchers will have a program delivered by Olney Baptist youth pastor Jaden Brisco, followed by a free lunch for all in attendance.

The church will also give away door prizes and children’s bikes to those who come to celebrate. Fobbs said the aim of the event is to enjoy fellowship and the day.

“We give away bikes and gifts for the children, enjoy ourselves,” Fobbs said. “We’ll have our youth pastor there to preach a message and we’ll just fellowship and eat and make the most out of the day.”

Attendees should meet at Tommy Perkin’s Park at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 for the March beginning at 10. There is no cost to attend this event.
