WICHITA COUNTY ( KFDX/KJTL ) — The Wichita County Sheriff’s Office is gearing up for its National Night Out event Tuesday evening at the Kamay Volunteer Fire Department.

This year’s event will feature live demonstrations from law enforcement and first responders, free food, and several building projects for kids courtesy of Home Depot. Participants will even be able to interact with a patrol car and helicopter display and landing.

This event is free and open to the public on Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Kamay Volunteers Fire Department. Families are encouraged to attend and enjoy the festivities.

Deputy Melvin Joyner says this is a great chance for the public to connect with local law enforcement.

“Well, I hope everyone has a good time. Number one, I want the kids to have fun. They’ll see all the equipment; they get to touch and feel and then I hope that the parents will get to know the law enforcement people,” he said. “I hope they’ll pick up some information, whether it be crime prevention, drugs or alcohol, to help combat that and walk away with better knowledge.”

Wichita County is also hiring detention officers for the jail, and officers will be present at the event with information for those who are interested.
