BURKBURNETT ( KFDX/KJTL ) — In 2023, 1.4 million disc golfers used the popular score-keeping app UDisc, an increase of 200,000 players from 2022. With the sport’s continued growth, more schools throughout the nation are picking it up, including the first school in Texoma to have a team.

When long-time Burkburnett ISD educator Robert Daiker became the outdoor education teacher eight years ago, he had heard about disc golf but wasn’t really a fan.

“Until I made it part of the curriculum, and then I started playing it myself. I was like, you know, the first time you ever hit a golf shot, and you’re like, ‘Oh, I’m coming back.’ The first time you make that Frisbee fly the way you want it to, I was hooked,” Daiker said.

Daiker was hooked enough to start a high school disc golf team. He picked up two players, Jadyn Germann and Ethan Rhodes, who recently discovered their passion for the sport.

“I broke my wrist in soccer my junior year. I started doing physical therapy, and disc golf was one of the parts, so I started playing. I got hooked on it,” Germann said.

“Since starting playing on the disc golf team, I’ve made friends like Jayden, and I’ve just kind of grown,” Rhodes said. “Even just being in the outdoors in general, just having a good time, just connecting with the sounds that are around you and having a blast.”

Daiker says although the club is in its infancy, there are ways that you can help them grow the organization and the 13-hole course they have on campus.

“[We want] to raise some money for some additional baskets. The Newberry Disc Golf Group is sponsoring a tournament coming up here in October. It’s a doubles tournament at Lucy Park,” Daiker said. “Part of the proceeds goes towards our club, and when we get enough money to get a few more baskets, we’ll add them to our course and then keep going from there.”

Daiker hopes to inspire and encourage more players throughout the years as disc golf continues to become more popular.

The Lucy Park Burk doubles will be held on Saturday, Oct. 26, beginning at 7 a.m. Find more information about registration and event formatting through the event page and the Wichita Falls Area Disc Golf Facebook page.
