WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — A church feast day is a day on which the church celebrates a Christian who acts as a good role model for other Christians to follow. October 4 just happens to be that of Saint Francis, the patron saint of animals and the environment.

The Anglican Church of the Good Shepherd invites you to The Blessing of the Animals on Friday, October 4, at 6 p.m.

Father Miguel Elmer said Saint Francis was known for preaching to the animals and even taming a wild wolf, so they use his day to bestow blessings on pets and their owners. As for what type of animals, Father Elmer won’t turn any away.

“If you can bring it here to the church, bring it,” Father Elmer said. “There’s been talks of people bringing cattle or a horse, a favorite horse of theirs, or chickens or cats. Any kind of pet is welcome.”

The event is free and open to the public, and everyone is encouraged to bring their pets out.

“We’re all part of the created order,” Father Elmber said. “Us as human beings and animals being those who we are to care for. So why wouldn’t you want a blessing for your animal?”
