WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — The Wichita Falls housing authority has announced the temporary reopening of its waitlist for 3-bedroom low-income apartments.

The decision to reopen is part of public housing’s efforts to address growing housing demands in the area.

The housing waitlist has been closed since May due to high demand but will only remain open through the month of October, so families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Applicants will be screened based on specific criteria, with priority given to those who meet the highest need.

People who are domestic violence survivors and anyone displaced from a natural disaster can qualify for priority, and with so many people being displaced by Hurricane Helene, this is a great opportunity for locals and people far and wide.

Right now, openings are only for 3-bedroom units, but as other-size units become available, they will open those as needed as well. In order to qualify, applicants must have a minimum of 3 people in the household and a maximum of 6. Executive Director Paris Ward talks about some of the restrictions.

“If you’re a sex offender, you can’t live here. Or if you were convicted of manufacturing methamphetamine on public housing property. Those are the main things that would disqualify a person. But you can live here and have zero income,” Ward said. “The minimum rent is $50. It doesn’t matter if you’re a family of three or a family of six. That’s based on your income. If you do have income, then we do 30% of your income.”

The average time frame for being housed is approximately 1-6 months after approval.

You can pick up an application outside the public housing office at 501 Webster Street or call (940) 723-8389 extension 1 to have it emailed or faxed.
