LAWTON ( KFDX/KJTL ) — Roughly 1200 kids from several Oklahoma schools flocked to Fort Sill today for the 15th annual Frontier Army Day.

These kiddos got a hands on experience on what life was like at Fort Sill during the Western Expansion.

During this historical reenactment, students learned how laundry was done, how Buffalo soldiers dressed, and how the soldiers lived on post while checking out the old living quarters.

They also learned about artillery and how canons were utilized back then.

The lead Museum Curator of the Fort Sill National Historic Landmark and Museum, Noelle Scarfone, said it is always a blast for the kids to see.

Overall, it’s a great way for these students to learn not only about history on post but also about the state they live in.

“It’s a really great way to learn the history of this area, and really, you learn more than just the history of this area. You learn a little bit about the state of Oklahoma and what was going on in the United States during western expansion,” Scarfone said.

Frontier Army Day was for students only on Friday, but you can check it out for yourself during Frontier Army Days on Saturday, which is open to the public.

Scarfone said if you don’t have access to Fort Sill, you can stop at the visitors center to get a day pass for you and your family.

The event will be Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and you’ll also have the chance to watch a historic baseball game at 1 p.m. Scarfone wants to remind those looking to attend to bring blankets or lawn chairs.
