UPDATE at 4:55 p.m. on Oct. 15, 2024: The Montague County Sheriff’s Office reported in a Facebook post that US Highway 81 north of Ringgold is open again.

MONTAGUE COUNTY ( KFDX/KJTL ) — One person is dead following a major two-vehicle crash along Highway 81 near Ringgold on Tuesday afternoon.

First responders were dispatched to Highway 81 near Moody Road just north of Ringgold in Montague County on Tuesday afternoon, October 15, 2024, in reference to an injury accident.

Sgt. Juan Gutierrez with the Texas Department of Public Safety said it was a major two-vehicle crash with one confirmed fatality. The vehicles in the crash involved a truck-tractor semi and a passenger car.

According to our crew on the scene, Highway 81 north of Ringgold is currently closed in both directions as emergency personnel work the scene, with traffic being turned around and diverted from the area.

Additional details, including the cause of the crash and the identity of the deceased, have yet to be released as of the publication of this story.
