WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — A man awaiting trial for a fatal drunk driving crash in the summer of 2023 entered his plea during what was scheduled to be a simple pre-trial conference.

41-year-old Brandon Wright pled guilty to one count of intoxicated manslaughter with a vehicle and one count of aggravated assault with a vehicle.

Man with lengthy criminal record, jailed again for burglary

He also pleaded true to an enhancement paragraph from a 2003 charge.

When asked by presiding Judge Jeff McKnight how he pled to the charges, Wright was heard saying, ” I’m guilty, and I take full responsibility.”

Wright’s trial has been delayed multiple times and was set for another continuance before today’s plea.

Now, a jury of 12 men and women from Wichita County will determine Wright’s punishment in a trial that begins on November 18 in the 30th district court. On each count, he faces up to 20 years behind bars.

The charges against Wright stem from June 2023, when he was involved in a head-on collision near Sheppard Air Force Base.

Police said Wright was driving the wrong way on Spur 325 when he crashed into another vehicle shortly after midnight.

25-year-old Cha’quon Jeffrey, who was driving the car Wright collided with, was pronounced dead at the scene, and Veronica Diaz, a passenger in Jeffrey’s vehicle, was hospitalized from injuries she suffered in the crash.

Wright was pinned in his vehicle, had to be removed by the fire department, and was hospitalized.

Police said it was later discovered that Wright had a blood-alcohol content that was nearly three times the legal limit.
