Mustard only needs two ingredients to make at home: mustard seed (or ground mustard) and liquid.

What makes it special is what us added to it. The bright yellow stuff you put on your burgers or hot dogs adds turmeric for the yellow color plus a little paprika and garlic for extra flavor. Dijon mustard uses white wine instead of vinegar, plus a little sugar to balance the spice.

Ingredients for Whole Grain Honey Beer Mustard

You can probably guess the ingredients from the name:

    • mustard seeds (yellow, brown or a mix of both)
    • beer
    • honey
    • turmeric (optional for yellow color)
    • salt

You don't need to actually weigh the mustard seeds, just look at the label on your mustard seeds. The small plastic jars are about 1.4 ounces, the larger glass jar is about 2.5 ounces. You can use the whole jar and adjust the amounts of the other ingredients accordingly.

If you want a smoother mustard, use ground mustard or blend it until smooth.

The best beer to use to make mustard

Use what you like the taste of. I went with an IPA we had on hand. A lager will have a lighter taste, stout will be stronger.

    Recipe

    Ingredients

    • 1 ounce mustard seeds (yellow, brown or a mix of both)
    • ¼ cup beer
    • 2 tablespoons honey
    • ¼ teaspoon turmeric (optional)
    • pinch salt

    Instructions

    • Add all ingredients to a blender. Puree until smooth but still a bit chunky.
    • If the mustard seems too thick you can thin it with a little more beer or water.

    Notes

You don't need to actually weigh the mustard seeds, just look at the label on your mustard seeds. The small plastic jars are about 1.4 ounces, the larger glass jar is about 2.5 ounces. You can use the whole jar and adjust the amounts of the other ingredients accordingly.
