Whether it was on or off Catalina island, the boys’ volleyball team from Avalon looked comfortable in the CIF playoffs while reaching the Division 7 championship game. “The rise of the Avalon boys’ volleyball playoffs embodies what is best loved in high school athletics: heart, dedication and to never give up,” Avalon coach Carlos Martinez said. “Character goes a long way, and this group of boys have always had a lot of that.”
All-City Tech Team of the Year: Cabrillo Drone Soccer
With the rise of e-sports and other technologically-driven competitions like drone soccer, The562 and the Grunion Gazette are adding a “Tech Team of the Year” honor to this year’s All-City Awards, and our first selection couldn’t be easier. The Cabrillo High drone soccer team won a national championship this year, sweeping through the United States Drone Soccer National Championship in May.
Freshmen of the Year: Wilson’s Saniah Varnado & Long Beach Poly’s Ben Harris
No sport in Long Beach has been more successful than track and field over the last several years, so it’s no surprise that both of this year’s All-City Freshmen of the Year come from the oval. Long Beach Poly and Wilson both captured state titles this year, and neither would have been atop the podium at the end of the night if it hadn’t been for their standout freshmen.

For The Fridge: Long Beach Little League 11s Win District Title
The Long Beach Little League 11U All Stars recently won the Little League District 38 championship in thrilling fashion, defeating Lakewood Village 5-3 in a winner-take-all. The Long Beach boys lost to Village in the semifinals to fall into the loser’s bracket and had to win three straight games to take the district championship and move on to the sectional tournament.
LB in MLB: Jarren Duran Named American League All-Star
The breakout season for Jarren Duran reached a major milestone on Sunday, when the 27-year-old Boston Red Sox outfielder was named an American League All-Star. Duran, who was drafted out of Long Beach State back in the 2018 draft, has become a fixture atop the Boston batting order and has been one of the best players in baseball this season. He’s started all 89 games for the Red Sox so far, hitting .276 with a terrific .813 OPS.
