An Alabama lawmaker has filed a bill that would prohibit K-12 schools from not transferring student records based on unpaid balances.

HB 56, sponsored by Rep. Matt Simpson, R-Daphne, would apply to transfers between private schools. Simpson wrote over text Monday that he is open to suggestions if someone wants to amend the bill.

“It just says these records, you can’t keep the records based on unpaid tuition,” he said in a phone interview. “If you need to get unpaid tuition, you have other ways to get that.”

Simpson said the bill came from a local school facing issues with their graduation rates because a private school will not release records to the public school.

“The theory behind the bill is that the student shouldn’t suffer over financials,” he wrote. “That’s out of their control.”

I think we need to reread the bill. I thought it was to allow the holding of grades for non-payment but it think it says that the school cannot withhold transcripts for non-payment. This is good, if I’m reading it correctly

Well if this passes and all that are saying don't hold things for payment then get ready for your paycheck to be less in the future. When fees normally are owed it has nothing to do with who is less fortunate. It has everything to do with less responsible or flat out no care cause it was free. Lunch is free, ACT testing is free, Buses free, pencil and paper are free, Wifi is free and free to take home, and it's given to kids that are in poverty and it has progressed to kids that are closer to wealth than poverty. Is their circumstances sure but once you open Pandora's box you can't close it back. Side note almost $35 trillion and counting with no end in site because of things being FREE!!!
