African culture will be highlighted on Sunday when the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest holds its annual Tamasha la wa Afrika or Celebration of Africa.

The program will highlight the food, music and culture of the Swahili-speaking members of the congregation.

The celebration will be held from 2-5 p.m. in the courtyard. The church's Aleluya Kwaya (Alleluia Choir) will also perform.

In a social media posting about the event, Heavenly Rest acknowledges the role Abilene has played in becoming the new home for African refugees and other newcomers from East Africa.

"Tamasha la wa Africa is a wonderful opportunity to learn about Abilene’s African community, celebrate their culture, and acknowledge their contributions to Abilene," they wrote.
