Tellico Plains boys and Sequoyah girls picked up wins in the 2024 Monroe County Match-Up Monday at Madisonville Golf Club.

Tellico’s Lake Sewell won the day with a 37 score while Sequoyah’s Caroline Britton’s 44 was the top score on the girls’ side.

Tellico’s boys’ team scored 170, finishing nearly 30 strokes in front of Sequoyah’s 198 and Sweetwater’s 206. The Lady Chiefs led the way with a 93, scoring off Britton and Addison McConkey’s 49 to best Tellico Plains.

“Our kids played really well in my opinion. It was fun to see them have some good scores,” Tellico Plains coach Shawn Yates said.

    The Bears’ scores came from Sewell’s 37, Clint Moser’s 42, Camden Sewell’s 43 and a 48 from Will Sanders.

“My goal would be for us to possibly win a district championship. I think we’re pretty good in our district and, if I can keep all the girls healthy and they improve a little bit, they could possibly have a chance too,” Yates said. “I know what they are capable of. Some of them are less experienced golfers, but they have shown signs of improvement and more consistency. I think a district championship is realistic.

“I think over the course of the season and the next three or four weeks, they are going to be able to improve over the season.”

Sequoyah’s Ryan Hall led the Chiefs with a 45, followed by Dalton Johannsen’s 48, a 49 from Dru Sasser and a pair of 56s — both scored by Jacob Kirkland and Tucker McKee.

“This is my favorite match of the season, overall. To see them on the course with the other two (Monroe County) high schools, there is such a camaraderie. It is not the same as traveling out of town to play where we don’t know the other kids,” Sequoyah coach Brooke Johannsen said.

Prince’s 47 was joined by two 51s from Cooper Campbell and Henry Shamblin. Blaise Buccarelli added a 57.

“I saw some good things. Cy is trying to get back into the swing of golf after the spring with soccer and does a lot of trap shooting in the summer,” Sweetwater coach Bryce Mitchell said.

Prince joined the team midway through the 2023 season.

“He is already starting to get his swing back together and a couple holes in a couple of matches has really been the difference between him shooting low-40s and 39 or mid-40s. He has one or two holes that have blown up on him and kept him from being right there in the mix of having one of the lowest scores,” Mitchell added.

Campbell has been out for a couple of weeks, making Monday’s performance his first time around the sport in over 10 days. He birdied the final hole to end his day.

“That is always good to see on your last hole. You go home with a positive and think that is something to build on for next time,” Mitchell said. “Those two you kind of look to hopefully carry on through the end of the season.”

    Tellico’s Cydney Cruz added a 51 and a 53 from Alex Davisson while Sweetwater’s Hayden Thompson scored a 61.

Sequoyah’s Alex Blackshire finished with a 51, Todd Sensibaugh scored a 53 and Jordan Giles added a 57.

“I am just so proud. Watching Addison’s leadership really soar and Caroline is always consistently at the top,” Johannsen said. “What I love to see in all of them is just the growth and the leadership come out. Some of these guys I have been with since middle school, so watching them grow from that middle-school age to high school and into the people they are

“What I am really excited to see is how they can grow in the improvement this season.”

Brooklyn Sewell and Cheyenne Cruz added to the Lady Bears’ team scores with 60s, finishing with a team score of 110. Sequoyah’s Cali Compton finished with a 53 and a 54 from Megan Ladd.

“We have picked up some new golfers. Our goals are to improve with every match and play consistently,” Johannsen said. “They all have their own individual goals and I am excited to see them improve with each match.”

Sweetwater’s lone Lady Wildcat, Via Tilley, scored a 61.

“We are trying to find a way to get into the top three of the district. All you have to do is get into that top three and anything can happen at the regional tournament. It just takes one day of playing to see where you are at,” Mitchell said. “My main goal is to see them grow and go out there and enjoy the game. That is what means the most to me — seeing them grow in something that they can play for the rest of their lives.”

Isabelle Croft will play with the Lady Wildcats in addition to playing soccer at Sweetwater.
