Sequoyah’s Caroline Britton and Addison McConkey shared scores at Monday’s District 5-AA Championship that earned the duo advancement to the Region 3-AA Championship.

The two both shot 113s across 18 holes at Cleveland Country Club, a combination that saw the Sequoyah team finish fifth collectively.

Ryan Hall led Sequoyah’s boys with a 91 while the team’s score of 136 placed them sixth.

“It was just a great day out there. I have said before that they are like my kids, so, to watch them go out there, shake off the nerves and find a way to excel (is great),” Sequoyah coach Brooke Johannsen said. “That is a tough course, not one that we get to play often. But they gave it their all — every bit of it.”

Britton and McConkey — both sophomores — will compete in the Region 3-AA Championship at Bear Trace at Harrison Bay on Oct. 1

“For our girls to advance to region play, I am so excited for all of them,” Johanssen said.

The two finished with a share of 11th place, two strikes shy of the top 10.

Hall’s 91 placed him 22 overall and just three strokes short of forcing a playoff for a trip to the region championship.

The boys’ side finished tight, with the final cutoff score being 88 and eight golfers finished between the cutoff and Hall’s 91.

“I was lucky enough to get to talk to each one of them individually because of the way the tee times were set. We talked a lot about not specifically golf, but look how far you have come and to remember that we are just here to have a good time and play golf,” Johannsen added. “Don’t make it something bigger in your head. You get to represent your school and that is an honor, so just go out and play golf.”

Dalton Johannsen shot a 108 for the Chiefs, followed by a 109 for Dru Sasser and a 116 for Jesse Sensibaugh.

The Walker Valley boys won the district championship with +27, closely followed by Bradley Central’s +31 and Rhea County in third place with a +46.

Cleveland shot a +59 with a +70 from McMinn County.

Walker Valley’s Alex Robinson won the crown with a 75, followed by Bradley Central’s Andrew Suttles and Jaxson Chapman, both with 77. Rhea County’s Eli Everett and Walker Valley’s Cooper Lemons both scored a 78.

The Bradley Central Bearettes won the district championship with a +25, followed by Walker Valley’s +50, Cleveland’s +65 and Rhea County’s +71.

Bradley Central took three of the top five spots, including Addie Geren as champion, Colby Ann Turner as runner-up and fifth-place Gracie Sermons.

Ainsley Oliver of Walker Valley finished third place with a 92, followed by a 98 for Cleveland’s Zoie Stinnett.
