Seventy-four trees were given away Saturday at the final Alliance Farmer’s Market of the season.

The event was called the Barrie Kridler Memorial tree giveaway, and it was organized by the Alliance Shade Tree Commission and Green Alliance to promote tree canopy growth in Alliance.

Barrie Kridler and Barry Nichols of Kridler Gardens were instrumental in selecting and purchasing the trees before Kridler’s unexpected death on Sept. 1. To honor his service with the Shade Tree Commission and many other area organizations, the giveaway was dedicated to Kridler.

Other committee members were Taylor Baxter, Mike Greiner, Sarah Mastroianni and Leigh Mainwaring.

Cheryle Bailey, Angie Guappone and Malachi Hawley from Kridler Gardens worked with Shade Tree and Green Alliance volunteers to distribute the trees, which included Red Maples, Willow Oaks, Kouza Dogwoods and Red Buckeyes.

Trees were given to Alliance residents on a first-come, first-served basis and were limited to one per household.  The event was considered a success and plans are underway for more giveaways in the future.
