Highway Patrol: Elementary school student, parent struck by school bus in Anderson County

A Midway Elementary School student was struck and knocked to the ground, but not run over, by a school bus owned and operated by District Five Thursday morning, according to school officials.

The student's parent was also injured, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

According to the school's preliminary investigation, the student was not at his stop this morning. After the driver restarted and moved forward, the student could be seen across the front of the bus from the driver's side.

"We will review the situation and the bus video to ensure all procedures were followed," said Anderson School District Chief Communications Officer Kyle L. Newton .

"From what we have heard, the student is doing alright, and I know the principal at Midway has visited with him," Newton said. "We have not heard anything relating to charges from law enforcement."

The South Carolina of Highway Patrol confirmed they are investigating the cause of the accident to determine any potential negligence or safety violations.

"The accident involved two pedestrians, a child and a parent, who were crossing the street when they were struck by the school bus," Master Trooper Mitch Ridgeway said . "Both suffered minor injuries and were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment."

The South Carolina Department of Highway Patrol is investigating this case.
