Midway Elementary student, parent home after being struck by bus, driver receives ticket

The Midway Elementary School student and parent struck by a school bus in Anderson County Thursday morning were treated and released from the hospital, according to a District 5 official.

"We were informed last evening that the student and his mother returned home after being cleared from the hospital," said Anderson School District Chief Communications Officer Kyle L. Newton . "We are glad both are doing well, and we are looking forward to welcoming him back to Midway soon."

Master Trooper Mitch Ridgeway said the bus driver was issued a traffic violation for improperly starting and stopping the vehicle.

On Thursday morning, the student and their parent were struck and knocked to the ground by a school bus owned and operated by District Five.

"Fortunately, they were not run over by the bus, but they did sustain minor injuries," Ridgeway said .

As confirmed by school officials, both were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital for treatment.

"The school has reviewed the situation and the bus video to ensure all procedures were followed," Newton said. "The school's preliminary investigation showed that the student was not at his stop this morning. After the driver restarted and moved forward, the student could be seen across the front of the bus from the driver's side."
