‘We’re not a party town’: Chelsea residents resist extended noise ordinance
CHELSEA, MI – Some Chelsea residents are pushing back against a city proposal that would allow local businesses to stay open later at night. Multiple people spoke out at the Monday, July 15 Chelsea City Council meeting against the recommendation from City Manager Marty Colburn and the Chelsea Downtown Development Authority to extend the city’s noise ordinance in the downtown area by two hours, from 10 p.m. to midnight.
Ann Arbor molecular diagnostic facility closing, eliminating 175 jobs
ANN ARBOR, MI – An Ann Arbor facility for molecular diagnostic solutions plans to close and lay off 175 employees. NeuMoDx Molecular Inc., 1250 Eisenhower Place, designs and develops solutions for hospital and clinical reference laboratories, It is part of a company called QIAGEN, which provides products, among others, used in forensics, to diagnose diseases, in academic and pharmaceutical research or to analyze drinking water quality.

Gun Lake Tribe raises 1 million gallon water tank with eye on future development
ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI – Gun Lake Tribe raised a 1-million gallon water tank, with the tribe’s logo, on its water tower along U.S. 131. The tribe recently celebrated the last major part of the water tower, which will provide service to the casino, its government buildings and Noonday gas station and convenience store and add capacity for a new water-treatment plant.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is closing single lanes on I-94 between I-69 and Partello Road near Marshall. Ann Arbor Art Fair dedicates ‘Tree of life’ sculpture to the city
ANN ARBOR, MI – The Ann Arbor Art Fair purchased and dedicated a sculpture to the city of Ann Arbor for its annual collaboration and in honor of the city’s bicentennial. Banning renter background checks draws pushback from landlords, support from ex-offenders
YPSILANTI, MI – Landlords are pushing against a proposed ordinance banning criminal background checks of Ypsilanti renters, with few exceptions. “This compromises the safety of existing tenants, children, our neighbors and our community at large,” said Mike Eller, who said he is a local landlord and lifetime resident. “There is an expectation that we as landlords do our due diligence in creating a safe community for them, and this takes that away from us.”

Great Lakes really warming up, Warmest since 2020
The progression from a very warm winter to now has caused the Great Lakes’ surface waters to generally be the warmest to date in the past four years. We are definitely seeing how an extremely warm winter and very little Great Lakes’ ice can translate into warmer waters in the summer. It has been the case this summer. Now the surface water temperatures around the Great Lakes are generally showing up as the warmest for July 16 since 2020.
