Accurate provider directory information is foundational to patient access, care coordination, comparing health plan networks, information exchange and price transparency. However, the challenges with existing datasets are well-documented. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), provider directories “often contain inaccurate information, rarely support interoperable data exchange or public health reporting, and are costly to the health care industry.” A recent report finds that the NPPES National Provider Identifier (NPI) registry matched only 28% of provider names, addresses and specialties when compared to health plan directories.
