World Youth Energy Action: A Journey to Understand Low-Carbon Development

Starting their journey from Beijing, 15 young people from around the world explored green and smart mines and ventured into the Gobi Desert for a closer look at wind turbines and photovoltaic panels.

In the “2024 World Youth Energy Action” from August 9th to 13th, a delegation of the youth from 10 countries experienced China’s high-quality energy industry development.

Before their departure, the international delegation joined an online talk with energy workers in Inner Mongolia and Gansu at National Energy Group’s production control center in Beijing. They learned the integration, intelligence and efficiency of the smart operating system.

Raymond Aitibasa Atanga, a lecturer from the University of Ghana’s Department of Environmental Science noticed China’s significant contributions to global sustainable development benefited African countries.

At the green mine of the Zhungeer Group, the delegation were impressed by the automated operation of 300-ton unmanned trucks and the reclamation area where hundreds of species of wildlife have made their home.

“I thought coal was black, dirty, and non-eco-friendly. But the coal can be more environmentally friendly through efficient mining, transportation and use,” Patrick Jack Robertson, co-founder of Smart Air, a British company, said.

In the Gobi Desert, wind turbines are converting wind energy into “green electricity.” The youth visited Longyuan Yumen Wind Farm, or the “cradle of Gansu wind power”, and learned about China’s efforts in building green electricity brand to promote green and low-carbon development.

“I’ve seen many new technologies applied to energy transition, but what surprised me most was that communities and residents are also involved in social green development. This is the sustainable way,” Keyth Cristina Nascimento Guimarães, founder of a Brazilian company said.

The “World Youth Energy Action” is an international exchange activity jointly created by the China International Communications Group and the National Energy Group.
