(AP) — A man accused of fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend and her mother outside a Kentucky courthouse has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after leading police on a highway pursuit that ended in a church parking lot, authorities said Tuesday. The suspect, Christopher Elder, 46, died Monday evening at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was airlifted earlier in the day. Elder was accused of opening fire Monday morning in a parking lot outside the Hardin County Justice Center in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. Killed were Erica Riley, 37, and her mother, 71-year-old Janet Riley. A third victim, a man who has not been identified but is related to both women, is hospitalized in stable condition, police said. They had shown up for a court hearing regarding a protective order against Elder. Responding to the shooting, Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman said Tuesday that his office will work with state policymakers to look for ways to prevent such tragedies from happening again.

It is believed to be that of the daughter of British tech magnate Mike Lynch, who also perished when the boat sank earlier this week. Hannah Lynch, 18, was the last person unaccounted for aboard The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht that went down in a storm early Monday. Mike Lynch’s body was recovered Thursday. He had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with his family and the people who had defended him at trial in the United States. His wife, Angela Bacares, was among the 15 survivors. “The Lynch family is devastated, in shock and is being comforted and supported by family and friends. Their thoughts are with everyone affected by the tragedy,” a spokesperson for the family said in a statement issued Friday.

TORONTO (AP) — The union representing workers at Canadian National Railway Co. has taken down picket lines and said its workers will begin returning to work Friday, but it’s not yet clear how quickly trains will start rolling again.  However, the Teamsters said the work stoppage at Canada’s other major freight railroad, Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd., remains ongoing, pending an order from the Canada Industrial Relations Board. Another hearing is scheduled Friday morning, but it’s unclear how quickly the board will issue its decision. The Canadian government forced the country’s two major railroads into arbitration with their labor union late Thursday afternoon, a move aimed at averting potentially dire economic consequences across the country and in the U.S. if the trains are sidelined for a long period. The government’s action came more than 16 hours after Canadian National and CPKC locked out workers over a labor agreement impasse. Both railroads said they would work to get trains moving again as soon as possible.
