The 2.67-acre property was acquired in 2022 and opened to U-Haul customers on Aug. 7 after more than two years of renovations. Located directly across the street from U-Haul Moving & Storage of Lebanon at 1440 Cumberland St., the new facility is managed by the parent store.

A new 60,880-square-foot building offers a variety of 830 indoor self-storage units with climate-control options and high-tech security features. There is also an existing 10,683-square-foot building repurposed as a U-Box® warehouse for up to 190 mobile storage containers.

On Friday the 13th, the grand-opening festivities will start at 11:30 a.m. and run all day. The community is invited to enjoy a free catered lunch from Heisey’s Diner; receive guided facility tours; be entertained by 99.7 Wilbur Radio’s live broadcast; and register for giveaways like a U-Haul hitch package, a bike rack package, and a $200 gift certificate for general merchandise.

Lebanon Mayor Sherry Capello and local commissioners, representatives and dignitaries are expected to attend. The Lebanon Fire Department will be on site to offer safety tips and displays. Local nonprofits are also set to take part in the community day and share their missions with attendees.

Mike Zemba, U-Haul Area District Vice President, said the Company is pleased to address rising customer demand for its storage products in Lebanon County.

“Our existing self-storage has been at 100% occupancy for years,” Zemba said. “The parcel of land across from our U-Haul center was once a weaving mill. The loss of that mill to a fire years ago has allowed us to reuse the property to construct a beautiful three-story, state-of-the-art facility.”

U-Haul owners representative Jeff Levengood, who was raised in Lebanon and calls the community his home, oversaw development of the new facility.

“Our original U-Haul center has been here since 1979, helping the community grow with residential mobility and storage solutions for 45 years,” Levengood said. “The new facility will allow us to support Lebanon’s continued growth.”

U-Haul Company’s Adaptive Reuse program was implemented to transform the property and preserve the existing building. This corporate sustainability strategy for opening stores reduces emissions, eliminates blight and offers the fastest route to providing the quality storage products and trusted self-move services U-Haul customers expect.

The site has a history of industrial use dating back to the 1880s. The property housed a rolling mill (1880s-1910s), a silk manufacturer (1950s) and a weaving company (1960s-1990s). The main manufacturing building, which is no longer there, was built in the early 1900s and caught fire in the 1990s.

In addition to indoor climate-controlled storage, U-Haul Storage of Lebanon offers drive-in load/unload bays for protection from the weather; loading carts; electronic entry for customer access; propane; trailer hitches; U-Box portable moving and storage containers; and a U-Haul Re-Use Center where people can take and leave furnishings in good condition to assist their neighbors – one of the Company’s many green programs.

U-Haul Company of Lehigh Valley president Clay Breece will hire five to seven additional Team Members at the parent store to help manage the new facility. U-Haul, honored as a Best for Vets employer by The Military Times, actively recruits veterans and gives them preference in the hiring process. Find careers at uhauljobs.com.
