Man police say was impaired is in custody after pickup crashes into Arizona restaurant, injuring 30

APACHE JUNCTION, Ariz. (AP) — As many as 30 people were injured after a vehicle crashed into an Elks Lodge restaurant in the Phoenix suburb of Apache Junction, authorities said Sunday.

City police said 73-year-old Thomas Edward Kain was arrested after he got into his truck to leave the restaurant and accidentally drove into the front of the building around 7 p.m. Saturday.

Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash, but they didn’t disclose Sunday what charges Kain could face.

Jail records show Kain was in custody in Pinal County, but court records weren’t available online Sunday and it was unclear if he had a lawyer representing him in the case.

Apache Junction Police Officer Darrin Hatch said authorities received a 911 call from a patron at the Elks Lodge who said a man left the bar and got into a truck before the crash.

Police said 10 of the injured were taken to hospitals by ground ambulances for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries ranging from deep cuts to fractures. One person was in critical but stable condition.

Fifteen others were treated at the scene for minor injuries and police said at least five more people drove themselves to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Apache Junction is about 36 miles (58 kilometers) west of Phoenix.
