ASHVILLE — A prehistoric ceremonial site, the Snake Den Mounts, awaits those who participate in this fall hike between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sept. 15 starting at The Barn at Pleasant Pines Pond, Ashville. Members of the Snake Den Mounds Preservation Society will lead the hike, after a presentation by Brad Lepper of the Ohio Historical Connection.

The event starts at a local facility where artifacts collected by the Hopewell that used the site over 2,000 years ago will be displayed. The presentation will also include animated movies showing how the Native Peoples lived at the prehistoric site. The displays were funded in part by the Pickaway County Community Foundation (PCCF).

Some displays show amazing discoveries like “silver nuggets” from Canada and melted lava-like rock. Experts will be on hand to explain these and other discoveries.

This year’s featured speaker is Lepper, Ohio’s Senior Archeologist and World Heritage Program Director at Ohio History Connection. Lepper will discuss Ohio’s Hopewell World Heritage sites and the process that led to their designation.

After his presentation the attendees will be invited to hike up to the prehistoric site. Those who are unable to hike will be transported to the site. Participants will also be treated to an awe-inspiring panoramic view from this high point.

The deadline for registration is noon Sept. 6. Registration is online at the Snake Den Mounds Preservation Society website, snake-den-mounds.com.
