NELSONVILLE — The Athens-Hocking Solid Waste District is pleased to announce the upcoming Fall Recycling Days scheduled for between 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, October 12 at the Hocking County Fairgrounds and Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 9am-1pm at the Athens County Fairgrounds.

As in the past, the event will collect appliances, E-waste, cell phones, household goods, clothing, scrap metal, mattresses, books and batteries.

The Solid Waste District will be charging a fee for recycling TVs ($20-$40/TV) and fluorescent tubes and compact bulbs at 50 cents each with only cash or checks accepted. No Household Hazardous Waste or appliances with Freon, Tires or Shredding will be collected.

There were special collections held earlier this year for tires and household hazardous waste. These materials will be collected again next year at our events in the spring and fall, if we received grants to accept them.

“Residents of Athens and Hocking County are encouraged to bring unwanted items for reuse, which will go to area resale shops, recycled by a recycler or sent to the landfill.” said Jane Forrest Redfern, AHSWD Director. “We thank our partners for helping us to reuse, recycle and safely dispose of materials. We also want to be clear that we are not accepting tires at any of our fall events or shredding.”

Residents are encouraged to go to local tire retailers to get their tires recycled or hold on to them until our Spring events. If residents have shredding or need shredding done, they are encouraged to call the office to make an appointment for this service.

This will no longer be done on recycling days. In addition to the Recycling Days, the Friends of the Athens Public Library is holding an event to collect new and gently used books between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. October 12 at the Athens Public Library.

The District’s partners include Southeast Ohio Recycling Terminal, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Goodwill, Rural Action, Rumpke, McKee’s Auto Parts and Michel’s Iron & Metal. For a complete list of items or more information, contact A-HSWD at or visit www.ahswd.org or call 740-753-6885.

AHSWD is also taking nominations for 2024 Recycling Heros, deadline for submissions is November 1. Visit AHSWD.org to nominate an individual, organization or business who is a Recycling Hero in our Athens and Hocking community.
