One of America's biggest discount retailers is opening a new location this fall at one of Columbia County's busiest intersections.

A Dollar General store at the corner of North Belair and Owens roads in Evans is expected to be completed by the first week of November, according to Juli Means, director of marketing and business development for commercial real estate firm Jordan Trotter.

The land parcel of slightly less than an acre was bought for $300,000 in June by Trotter General, a limited-liability company affiliated with Jordan Trotter. The land is next to the former site of Bel Air Elementary School.

Trotter General successfully applied in July for an easement encroachment agreement with the county to erect a 3-foot-tall retaining wall on the construction site of a proposed 10,640-square-foot Dollar General.

It will be Evans' second Dollar General. The other is at 4388 Washington Rd., across from Evans Crossing Shopping Center.

There are 24 Augusta-area Dollar Generals in Richmond, Columbia, Aiken and McCormick counties.

Dollar General said during a March earnings call that it plans to open 800 new stores, remodel 1,500 and relocate 85 in 2024. In February, the company opened its 20,000th store.
