    Restaurant inspections: Augusta fast-food joint just rinsing dishes instead of washing

    The Georgia Department of Public Health, Environmental Health Section, conducts regular restaurant inspections to help keep residents and visitors safe.

    The following is a list of restaurants in Richmond and Columbia counties that have been inspected between Aug. 22 and 29, accompanied by their scores and, in some cases, the health infractions that lowered those scores.

    Disclaimer: On any given day, an establishment may have fewer or more violations than noted in their most recent inspection. An inspection conducted on any given day may not be representative of the overall, long-term conditions at the establishment. A few more recent, follow-up inspections may not be included here.

    Here are food and drink establishments in Richmond and Columbia counties that passed recent food-service inspections between Aug. 22 and 29 with scores of 100, without a single health violation:

    Inspector's comments: "Observed no Certified Food Protection Manager Certification. Obtain a certification ASAP."

    "Observed dead bugs inside the coolers/freezers. Clean up all dead bugs in coolers/freezers."

    "Observed live roaches on top of equipment. Contact a licensed pest control operator to get rid of roaches. Send proof of pest control management to the health department by 8/30/24."

    876 Island Cuisine, 101 Maple Dr.: 87

    Inspector's comments: "Observed multiple food items being cold held above 41 degrees Fahrenheit in reach in cooler. Place items on ice bath and call technician to ensure items are cold held at 41 degrees Fahrenheit and below."

    "Observed chicken cooling in a manner that would not reach the required time and temperature for proper cooling methods. Chicken was reheated, and other food items discarded. Ensure proper cooling methods are used with required time and temperature."

    Hardee's, 3309 Peach Orchard Rd.: 87

    Inspector's comments: “Observed food served to customer and returned the food. Employee put food back on food staging area and then added more food to the bag. If a customer touches the bag or food in anyway and then returns it that must be thrown away.”

    "Observed food items in walk-in cooler being held past discard date and time. After discard date and time has passed food must be thrown away.”

    Mercado Emanuel, 3009 Peach Orchard Rd.: 81

    Inspector's comments: “Observed hand washing sink with no paper towels and soap. Handwashing sink needs to have paper towels and hand soap at its location.”

    "Observed multiple containers in reach-in cooler that had no prep and discard dates. Food not in original containers need prep and discard dates.”

    "Observed food left out on tabletop to thaw. Thaw by having constant water running on the food or let thaw overnight in reach-in cooler.”

    "Observed bowl being used as a scoop and left resting in the food. If using bowl as a scoop, bowl must be left outside of the food.”

    "Observed door being left open to the outdoors and letting in insects. Keep kitchen door closed to the outside to prevent insects.”

    Dairy Queen, 3102 Peach Orchard Rd.: 80

    Inspector's comments: “Observed uncovered food in cooler. Prep area food covered while not in use.”

    “Observed employees just rinsing dishes off and using them again. Dishes should be cleaned in the wash first, rinse second and sanitized for the last step.”

    “Observed sliced tomatoes in walk-in cooler with no prep and discard date. Food not in original container should have prep and discard dates.”

    “Observed cleaning supplies out while not in use. Cleaning supplies should be kept in designated areas while not in use.”

    “Observed cook wearing multiple bracelets. Only a single plain banded ring is allowed.”

    “Observed gnats and flies throughout the whole kitchen. Clean up old food and pest control treat for the insects.”
