Each week, the Carroll County Times highlights a Team of the Week, five standout players and top statistical performances.

    Team of the Week

    Manchester Valley girls lacrosse

The Mavericks closed out their second straight unbeaten regular season and Carroll County championship with a nonconference win over Oakdale and a league victory against Liberty last week.

The Lions gave the Mavericks one of their toughest tests during the latter’s 33-game winning streak in the final of the 4 Causes 4 Champions tournament earlier this year, a 10-9 Manchester Valley victory. The second time around was a different story as the Mavericks won, 17-6.

    Honorable mentions

Liberty baseball: The Lions claimed the county championship with a 10-9 win over rival Century. They went 4-0 last week with victories over South Carroll, Pikesville and Walkersville.

Francis Scott Key softball: Although their 16-game winning ended in a nonconference game, the Eagles wrapped up county play unbeaten and clinched their second straight county title.

    5-star players

Taylor Fique, Manchester Valley, girls lacrosse: Fique, a freshman, had one of the biggest games of her young career Thursday when she scored seven goals in the win over Liberty. She finished the regular season with 56 goals and 19 assists.

Emma Reaves, Westminster, girls track and field: At Thursday’s Maverick Madness track meet, Reaves threw the discuss 153 feet, 6 inches, the longest in Maryland this spring. It broke a Carroll County record that had stood since 1986.

Carter Shanks, Liberty, baseball: In four games last week, Shanks went 7-for-15 with seven RBIs and three runs scored. He had a home run and a double in Thursday’s win over Walkersville and was the winning pitcher in last Monday’s win over South Carroll.

Jacob Speigle, Westminster, boys lacrosse: In three games last week, Speigel totaled nine goals and three assists. Highlighting the week was a five-goal effort in Friday’s regular-season finale against South Carroll.

Sienna Perryman, Winters Mill, girls lacrosse: Perryman had a hand in almost every one of the Falcons’ goals last week. On Tuesday against Smithsburg, she scored five goals and assisted on nine others. Against Centennial on Thursday, she scored twice and added six assists.
