A Baltimore Police officer and a security guard exchanged gunfire Wednesday with a suspect in a separate shooting, the police department said.

Officers arrived around 10:49 a.m. at the 2700 block of Spelman Road in Cherry Hill for a report of a shooting. They found a 33-year-old man with what appeared to be life-threatening gunshot wounds. Medics took him to the hospital, and he is in critical condition, police said Wednesday afternoon.

Neighbors said the shooting happened near a bus stop by the intersection of Spelman and Woodview roads near Cherry Hill Homes.

Police learned a suspect was still in the area and gave chase, the department said. The suspect fired a gun at an officer and armed security guard who, in turn, fired back, according to police. Police arrested the 29-year-old suspect, who was taken to the hospital for a leg injury. Police said the department does not know what led to the injury.
