‘Summerville’ celebrated at Sellwood & Westmoreland businesses
Saturday, August 3rd, saw the return of a Sellwood Moreland Business Alliance (SMBA) annual event – Summerville – among businesses in the Sellwood and Westmoreland business districts. Some participants started out at a “hive” location – one of those being at SMILE Station in Sellwood – at any one of which they received a map of participating businesses and free “bee deely bobber” headbands. Other neighbors joining in just looked for balloons of bees and signage near the some 30 participating businesses. ...
Business Association hosts ‘Best of Brooklyn’ BBQ
Brooklyn Park on S.E. Milwaukie Avenue, a couple of blocks south of Powell, was the location for the 2024 “Best of Brooklyn” BBQ on the late Thursday afternoon and evening of Thursday, July 25. “Essentially, this is a street fair! But, instead of it being held in a street, we’re hosting it here in Brooklyn Park,” explained Greater Brooklyn Business Association (GBBA) President Melaney Dittler of “More Realty”. “The first 150 Brooklyn neighborhood residents to come by will get a free meal from the ‘Retrolicious’...
‘Hip Chicks do Wine’ asks for community support after ‘very tough’ year
“Hip Chicks do Wine” has been a staple of Southeast Portland since 1999. Now its owners, Laurie Lewis and Renee Neely, say they’ve been “struggling” to keep the doors open since the COVID-19 pandemic. “It has been a very tough 2024, and we are way under in walk-in sales and traffic. And we could use a little bit of community support,” Lewis said. “And it’s not just us. It’s small businesses throughout the Portland metro area. It is wineries across Oregon. COVID-19 hit us hard....
HISTORY: Westmoreland building across from QFC undergoes 4th remodel
In late July, the façade was peeled away from what was most recently a Bank of America branch at S.E. Milwaukie Avenue and Claybourne Street – disclosing a hand-painted sign for “Silhouette Spa.” This was apparently a health club and weight reduction business operating in the late 1950s and early 1960s. But, when stripped bare, the poured-concrete structure featured subtle geometric Art Deco ornamentation, suggesting an even earlier architectural style. After sifting through building and newspaper records, with helpful leads from fellow BEE writer Dana...
BDNA hosts ‘night out’ party for Brentwood-Darlington
Reminiscent of the “National Night Out Against Crime” gatherings once endorsed by the City of Portland, leaders of the Brentwood-Darlington Neighborhood Association (BDNA) hosted a neighborhood barbecue and party on Saturday afternoon, August 10th, at the Brentwood-Darlington Community Center Inside the building and out – with activities spilling out into Brentwood City Park — some 300 adults and kids enjoyed the party. Unlike many of the “Party On! Portland” events...
Morning fire burns nine Mt. Scott-Arleta apartments
Near dawn on Saturday morning, August 3rd, many residents of “The Arleta” apartment complex, at 5224 S.E. 72nd Avenue near Mitchell Street, suddenly smelled smoke – and some saw flames. Many frantic calls to the 9-1-1 Center sent multiple Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) crews their way. Lents Station 11’s Engine and Rescue Companies arrived first, at 7:07 a.m. “Responding crews communicated to dispatchers that they saw a smoke column...

Workshops were not held during the pandemic, except for one...

More ice cream, music, and fun at ‘Sundae in the Park’
Lovely weather made it a perfect Sunday afternoon on August 4 for the annual “Sundae in the Park” celebration held in Sellwood Park, on the bluff overlooking Oaks Bottom, Oaks Park, and the Willamette River. Indeed, real ice cream sundaes were back, scooped up by Sellwood Community House adult and teen volunteers – complete with toppings. “This is the 44th annual ‘Sundae in the Park’ – an annual tradition that...
LETTERS to the Editor
Requiem for a cherry tree Editor, The world is a scary place these days, but there are still those moments that make my heart swell, with the tenderest of feelings. In my neighborhood there’s an old cherry tree. For years there had been a swing hanging from it, and my grandchildren loved swinging (high in the air) whenever they walked by, as did all the other children in the neighborhood....
Crash on Powell Blvd crumples cars, stalls commuter traffic
A two-car, side-impact (“T-Bone”) smashup in the Brooklyn neighborhood, on S.E. Powell Boulevard near 10th Avenue on Thursday afternoon, August 1st, brought to a halt traffic along the highway. Medical emergency first responders and Central Precinct officers who arrived at the 6:49 p.m. collision found the wreckage blocking traffic in the eastbound lanes of Powell coming off the Ross Island Bridge. “As bad as this crash may look, everyone involved...
HISTORY: Part 2 – Frenchy Gratton makes moves on Milwaukie!
For those who came in late: In the last issue of THE BEE, the location of the mysterious “Gratton’s Grove” was revealed, and a few facts about its namesake – Isaac “Frenchy” Gratton – were offered. These included both the successful operation of his legitimate business, the Standard Box Factory, and his other marginally legal enterprises – running gambling saloons in downtown Portland. Leaving his native Quebec at age seventeen he worked his way across the United States, harvesting cotton in the South – it...
Summer markets in Southeast celebrate Asian culture, food, and art
The sights, sounds, and scents of Asian street markets came to life this summer in Southeast Portland’s Foster-Powell neighborhood. The White Lotus Foundation (WLF) hosted a series of summer markets, held each Saturday and Sunday, from July 13 through August 4. Free admission, and a wide variety of art, food, and entertainment, drew an estimated 12,000 attendees to the parking lot of Shun Fat Supermarket, at 5253 S.E. 82nd Avenue of Roses – a former Fred Meyer store – over the course of those four...
Residents seeking safer Woodstock streets
As neighbors report difficulty in walking their children to school – and after a couple of people have even been hit by cars on or near Woodstock Boulevard – it is clear to residents that there is a need for more pedestrian safety in that Inner Southeast neighborhood. One who lives south of Woodstock Boulevard near the Multnomah Branch Library was walking her children to Woodstock Elementary School daily, and became increasingly aware of serious safety issues. ...
Transient shack fire menaces Brentwood-Darlington homes
A brush fire along the Springwater Corridor Trail, near S.E. 81st Avenue and Harney Street, put houses in danger for a time, in the southeast corner of the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood on Thursday, July 25. When the first of six Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) crews, from five stations, plus mutual-aid crews from Clackamas Fire District 1, arrived minutes after the first calls to 9-1-1, they found a roaring field fire crackling swiftly toward homes nearby. ...

Lincoln Nautilus is the unexpected luxury SUV
I have a confession to make: I sometimes forget that Lincoln is still making vehicles. They only make SUVs now, so the days of the Continental and Town Car are long gone, but Lincoln is moving forward with the kind of vehicles that people want to buy right now. As a rule, that means compact and midsize crossover SUVs. You can also get a crossover full-size and a traditional body-on-frame full-size from Lincoln, but today we'll talk about the midsize Nautilus. When the Nautilus showed...
