SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WSBT) — South Bend International Airport is set to receive $44 million in improvements aimed in enhancing the passenger experience. This substantial investment will be used for taxiway repairs, runway enhancements, and the reopening of an unused gate. These upgrades are part of a broader effort to provide travelers with a first-class journey.

Patrick Mac Carthaigh, Vice President of Operations at South Bend International, emphasized the unique and comfortable travel experience the airport strives to offer. “We are focusing on making South Bend a comfortable, safe traveling experience. Our terminal improvements are aimed at ensuring a seamless process for passengers,” Mac Carthaigh said.

In addition to the infrastructure improvements, the airport will introduce a new service animal relief center. The reopening of an underutilized gate will also take place, particularly during busier times of the year. “We’re making this gate functional for peak seasons and new flights, which will significantly enhance the passenger experience,” added Mac Carthaigh.

Travelers at South Bend International have already expressed their satisfaction with the airport’s current services and are looking forward to the new developments. Larry Corey, a frequent traveler, remarked, “I’m sure it will be fantastic. It’s a good thing for the airport and the people in the Michiana area, as well as others. Many people fly in from other places now.”

Brooke Bope, another regular passenger, shared her enthusiasm, saying, “I’m very excited. I love this airport; I only fly into this airport because it’s my favorite. I’m excited about the improvements.”

The taxiway B project is expected to be completed by the end of fall next year, while the other new features are anticipated to be ready by this fall. The upgrades are set to enhance the overall travel experience at South Bend International, making it a more attractive choice for travelers.
