ELKHART, Ind. -- A collective of concerned parents in Indiana is advocating for the establishment of a Child State of Emergency to enhance the safety of children in schools. Rio's Rainbow and the Parent Coalition for Child Safety and Wellness are spearheading this initiative, urging lawmakers to prioritize child safety and make Indiana a pioneer in this legislative effort.

The tragic story of 12-year-old Rio Allred, who took her own life due to persistent bullying, has galvanized this movement. "How many children need to suffer before action is taken?" asks Aaron Ball of Rio's Rainbow, underscoring the urgent need for stronger child protection measures.

Current child safety laws are criticized for their ambiguity, leaving parents like Rachel Van Alstine of the Parent Coalition for Child Safety and Wellness frustrated. She explains that when safety issues are reported to the Department of Child Services (DCS) or the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE), they often redirect concerns back to local school districts, offering no real resolution.

Van Alstine highlights that many school districts lack the resources to adequately address severe behavioral issues. "Educators are not trained psychiatrists," she says, emphasizing the need for specialized support within schools.

Ball and Van Alstine are advocating for comprehensive child safety legislation that addresses policy gaps and provides essential resources for schools. They believe that without a safe environment, children cannot focus on learning. "Worrying about safety in hallways, bathrooms, lunchrooms, and buses makes education secondary," Ball asserts.

The call for a Child State of Emergency aims to initiate difficult but necessary conversations about child safety and to foster a culture of protection and support. "It’s time to confront the harsh realities our children face and work collectively to change the culture," Van Alstine urges.

The initiative is seen as a potential lifesaver, emphasizing that urgent action is needed to protect the well-being of Indiana’s children.
